Our Fall and Spring BoatSmart meets for 5 Wednesday nights (one night built in for snow/inclement weather) from 7:00pm - 9:00pm at Montville Township Public Library, 90 Horseneck Rd, Montville, NJ Directions.  No more than 2 nights may be missed to qualify for the NJ State Police license.  Cost of the course is $65.00 per person which includes the manual for the course. 

Our late Spring BoatSmart Course meets for 4 consecutive nights (starting on a Monday) from 7:00pm - 9:00pm at Montville Township Public Library, 90 Horseneck Rd, Montville, NJ DirectionsAll nights must be attended to qualify for the NJ State Police license (no classes missed!).  Cost of the course is $65.00 per person which includes the manual for the course.

USPS is introducing something new – two-hour seminars for members, their families and the public that provide credits toward the USPS Boat Operator Certification program. Lackawanna will offer four seminars on Wednesdays (7:00–9:00 pm):  How to Use a Chart–April 16 and Using GPS– April 23 at the Chester Library,  Directions and Onboard Weather Forecasting–April 30 and Using VHF & VHF/DSC Marine Radio–May 7 at the Mennen Sports Arena Directions. The cost is $25.00 per seminar.

PWC Safety School

Did you know that.....

Many States now Require Mandatory Education For Boater Safety Certification for Boats & PWC's

NJ - Mandatory Education. Boaters must complete a proctored, boating safety course. Minimum age for certification is 13. No person under 13 years old may operate any power vessel on NJ waters. Those 13-15 years olds may operate the following vessels after completing an approved boating safety course: A vessel powered by a motor of no less then 1HP or a vessel powered by a 12 volt electric motor or a vessel 12 feet or greater in length powered by a motor, or a combination of motors less then 10 total HP. Those 16 years and older may operate any power vessel in accordance with the following: A person is required must carry proof of course completion with them. NY - For Recreational Boats other than PWC - No mandatory educational requirements for anyone 18 years of age or older. Those between the ages of 10 and 17 may operate a boat, without an adult supervisor if they successfully complete a proctored 8 hour boating safety course. Upon completion of the course, the individual must carry the required safety certificate at all times, while operating the boat
For PWCs.  New York State has enacted legislation requiring all PWC operators to complete a course in boating safety by January 1, 2004.
CT - Mandatory Education. Boaters must complete a proctored boating safety course. There is no minimum for age certification. Anyone who has a boating safety certificate may operate any boat (except personal watercraft PWC), except that someone under the age 12 may operate a boat over 10 hp only with an 18 year old or older (who also must have a Boating Safety Certificate) aboard. In order to operate a personal watercraft (PWC), one must a personal watercraft operation certificate. Anyone who has a PWC operation certificate may operate a PWC. Someone under age 12 may operate a personal watercraft provided s/he has a personal watercraft operation certificate and is accompanied by someone 18 years of older, who also has a PWC operation certificate, aboard the PWC. Boaters from another state who have a boating safety certificate must still take the Connecticut course to operate a PWC in Connecticut -there is no reciprocity.PA - Mandatory Education for PWC operators ONLY. These persons must complete a proctored, boating safety course. The minimum age to be certified for PWC operation is 12; the minimum operator age for PWCs is 12.
