Welcome Aboard!
Lackawanna Sail & Power Squadron is founded on three interrelated tenets: - Fraternity
- Safety
- Education
Fraternity extends beyond our own organization as virtually all of our events and educational programs are open to non-members, not to mention our civic service to the wider community. One of our most popular civic service (and safety) programs are our vessel safety checks, which check the compliance of your boat to state and federal laws. A prerequisite to a fun filled outing on a boat is ensuring it has all the
necessary equipment operating properly. A free vessel safety check is
the answer and our members will be happy to perform the check. Check the vessel safety check page for more details. We strongly believe in safety through education, and to that end, we have a wide array of educational opportunites: - America's Boating Course -- the basic boating course, and approved for award of New Jersey's required Boating Safety Certificate.
- Seminars -- two hour seminars covering a very focused area of study. Our seminars include areas of seamanship, piloting, navigation, equipment, and weather.
- Courses -- our courses are typically semester long and include Seamanship, inland and coastal piloting, offshore navigation, engine maintenance, sail, marine electronics and electrical systems, cruise planning, and weather.
- On the water training and boat operator certification
Finally, we have numerous social activities throughout the year, both on the water, such as our cruises, raft-ups, rendezvous, and clam bakes, and off the water, such as our membership meetings featuring notable speakers from the boating world or land-based training, such as our fire extinguisher training taught by firefighting professionals at the Public Safety Training Academy.
A
message from our Commander . . .
| Thank you for visiting our site! I'm looking forward to a great watch year with our members, friends, and prospective members! We should have something for every boater. This Spring we're offering a number of our popular seminars to get you ready for the season, not to mention scheduled and by appointment vessel safety checks to get your boat ready for the season. Then, this Summer, we have our fire extinguisher training, the district's rendezvous in Atlantic City, and our own Sail/Power North Raft-Up and Sail/Power South Clambake, not to mention boat operator certifications, and more events being planned. Fall and Winter will bring full schedules of seminars and courses, membership meetings, district conferences, the Holiday Party, and boat shows.
We're going to have a wonderful time this year, just as we always do, so if you're a member, we'll see you at our functions, and if you're not, then why not join? We have many membership benefits, not the least of which being insurance discounts only available to members which reflects the fruits of our educational and safety programs. I can personally attest to my insurance being cut by over half by joining the squadron. You will enjoy the company of other
knowledgeable boaters who are familiar with the local waters in and around New
Jersey. Our members' home waters range from Haverstraw Bay up the Hudson River down to Barnegat Bay.
Membership in the LSPS is open to
those 16 years and over who have passed the America's Boating Course or BoatSmart
examination. If you're interested please contact me.
